This offer Mr. Wells communicated to his
principals in London; and on 24th, April he informed this Govern- -ment that they were unwilling to continue to lend his services as Translation Master at Queen's College upon the reduced terms offered.

The Director of Education has impressed upon
me the great importance of retaining Mr. Wells' services at Queen's College and states that he knows of no one else who could be appointed to the post of Translation Master. In this view after careful consideration I concur and I may add that although the hours of duty may seem few Mr. Wells will probably in view of his great interest in the work give more time to it than the hours stipulated.

In all the circumstances therefore I have no hesitation in recommending for your favourable consideration that he should be appointed Translation Master on the following terms:-
(a). An annual engagement, terminable on either side, with three months' notice at the end of any calendar year.
(b). Salary: £300 to £360 per annum (increment according
to the existing Government scale).
(c). Hours: 12 hours per week during school terms, hours
to be selected subject to the Headmaster's approv- -al, and also so as to allow his attendance at the Government Examination Board.
(d). Duties: Control of Chinese translation and verna-
-cular studies in Queen's College subject to the Headmaster.
(e). Status: Temporary servant of Government. Visiting Master, directing vernacular teachers and the translation work of the (Translation) Chinese Kasters. To have access to the school at any hour during school hours.
(f). Pension: No pension whatever to attach to the post.
